Thoughts on summer
There is something magical about the changing of the seasons—as if the shifting times causes shifts in our own small, private lives, influencing even the everyday mundanities. Everything from how we wake up in the mornings, to how we take our coffee or tea, to the types of books and films we, at least if you are anything like me, want to watch. With the arrival of the first day of summer, I have been reflecting on the season and all that comes with it.
As a child, summer meant freedom, a break from the rigid scheduling of school, homework, extracurriculars, and dance classes. It was a chance to relax and laze about with a good book or to haul out the sprinklers and run around in the water with the neighbor kids. Summer was a time of excitement and fun, though I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t always take full advantage of it. An introvert by nature, I was never one to thrive in the seemingly endless stream of pool parties, neighborhood cookouts, and other social events. I was also far too precocious for my own good, and, as a result, I never allowed myself to really embrace the season and appreciate the little joys of childhood and the accompanying messiness.
Now, as an adult, I am learning to have a new appreciation for summertime. I may still struggle with the heat and humidity, but I am also more aware of the beauty of the season and making an effort to put my focus on those aspects.
On the way I wake up to the sunlight filtering in through the window instead of to the blaring of an alarm.
On the way the trail I like to walk on is bright and green, with a spattering of wildflowers growing along the sides.
On the taste of freshly picked berries and sweet watermelon.
On the sounds of birdsong as they herald the sun.
On the way the sunsets paint the sky the loveliest shades of pinks and purples.
And on the way a sudden summer downpour brings a rainbow overhead.
By choosing to pay attention to these little moments, I’ve gained a new perspective, a new outlook on summer. I actually feel like I enjoy the season more now than I ever did as a child, and I’m looking forward to see what this summer brings.
